pack-lightly.com
Pays you
Amount varies
Monthly pocket money: EUR 280 (German Foreign Office guideline rate, 2026). Room and board free. Language course usually subsidized. Round-trip flight self-funded (~USD $800–1,200). Agency fee EUR 80 one-time for non-EU applicants. Net monthly pocket money after flight amortization: ~EUR 190/mo (~USD $207). YOU GET PAID but very modestly.
US citizens can place themselves as au pairs in German host families via matching platforms (AuPairWorld, aupair.com) or agencies. Requires a Residence Permit for a language course / au pair. No dedicated US-to-Germany bilateral au pair treaty but German immigration law permits au pair arrangements with appropriate visa.
